What To See
Holidays to Tenerife offer the chance to
explore the best of the island, no matter
how long you're their for. The cliffs
to the north of the island are a good example
of just how diverse and thrilling this island,
the largest of the canary islands, really
is. Plunging 800 metres into the sea, the
Los Gigantes cliffs are among the highest in Europe.
Children will love the island's thrilling
attractions, from dolphin shows at AquaPark,
to the Aquarium shark tunnel and the many
beautiful parrots at Loro Parque. But save
a day to visit majestic Mount Teide, Tenerife's highest mountain, at 3,800
metres above the Atlantic. The national park
which surrounds the slopes is crammed with
photogenic sights, including strange, lava
formations, giving the area an mars landscape
look.
The lions and tigers of Jungle Park Zoo,
in the south of the island look happy enough
in the heat, while the eye-catching curves
and fountains of the Lido Martianez are half
swimming-pool complex, half modern-art sculpture.
But, on a sunny afternoon, we can think of
no better place to cool off than in this
Cesar Manrique-designed series of saltwater
pools, lava islands and bathing platforms.
More relaxing thrills can be found at the
island's Botanic Gardens, near Puerto de la Cruz, and the intriguing Cactus Garden - reminding
you that the desert is not too far away from
the green lawns of the resorts.
That said, the lush vegetation of the Taoro
Park, complete with its rushing waterfalls,
could have you believing you'd been transplanted
into the heart of the rainforest. It's
a remarkably peaceful oasis just a short
stroll away from the buzz of the holiday
resorts.
A bigger buzz altogether can be found at
the island's fast-developing capital,
Santa Cruz; a real, Spanish town with excellent
museums, a strong cultural calendar and,
of course, fabulous shopping.
